Digital media and Education

We are living in a world where digital media is an important part of every big sector including, commerce, education, health, business and entertainment. Digital media is an emerging technology in the world. Some of the examples of digital media include television, computer, internet, websites and mobiles. It helps connect people across the world through different social media sites. Also it has become important for the business industry as it helps them to get their work done faster. It also helps people to gather information about different topics across the world.

Digital media is about the major transition from paper to computers, blackboards in classrooms to smart classes, letters to email and much more. We have come across many new inventions in past few decades. Now every year so many smartphones, computers, laptops, machines are being launched. But if we travel 30 years back, there were no such advanced technologies, people would contact each other via letters, telegram etc. The mediums of exchanging information have changed with the time. Digital media is also contributing in the education sector today. Schools nowadays tend to adapt the latest technologies to educate and teach their students via using different devices including computers, projectors etc. The education system today is not only confined till the books, exams or homework. The education system, with the help of digital media, tires to make teaching fun for students. They show them video so that the students can learn with clear visuals and lesser confusions.

Also, the online resources are useful for students. They can revise from it again and again to polish their knowledge. Also, students can use the platform of digital media to exchange information online. The social media platforms such as, snapchat, Instagram, Facebook and many more are very popular among the youth across the world. They can use the platform of social media to create online groups to exchange important notes or study material.

Digital media is not only about social media. Digital media also includes television, radio, search engines etc. Search engines like Google are very helpful. It allows the students to search almost about any topic. Google is used by the students in my class to research about their assignments.

In 1990’s moat of the schools in my city would not have computers. The students studied via books and were taught in the classes which had blackboards. But with time the education system started to change. If I go back to my school now then I see the change. All the classrooms have smart classes. The students carry their laptops in the class. The school have many applications including security application, students application etc. The students can email the teachers if they have any doubts about it. Similarly, Deakin University, Melbourne is an advanced university. It also provides online courses like many other institutions across the world. Deakin University has many laboratories for the students to study. Students can read the online modules and listen to the recorded classes online to learn better. It is important to satisfy the independence of the students in order to let students attain the required regulation and learning (Ryan, 2000).

The digital media education system will soon replace the traditional education system completely. This education system helps a student to develop better abilities including problem solving, critical thinking. (Pazoa, 2002). As most of the jobs today require a skilful candidate who can work on a computer and is well aware about digital media.

The young generation is more inclined towards the digital education than the traditional education. They have their personal accounts on social media and emailing websites. Digital education makes learning more fun for the students. But it can also have some adverse effects. While digital media has lots of hopes and tools to allow a student to explore more information across the world. It also has some tools like social media which can be misused by the students. My friends in class was trolled over Facebook by some students for her weight. Digital media also has some other limitations. Such as, not everyone can afford it. A student might feel complex if they can’t afford to buy a laptop or a mobile phone like his peer. Students nowadays tend to have a lot of competition so they buy the latest technologies which can make the other students who cannot afford them.So it is the responsibility of the institutions and parents to guide the students to use the digital media efficiently.

Education is must. And it is always better to provide the best education to the children. It helps them to get good jobs and support their countries to grow. Digitally advanced education system is very useful. In countries like Australia, Canada it is very normal to have a smart class whereas the developing nations and the underdeveloped countries are still struggling to get the basic education. They don’t even have enough schools and other facilities like books etc. Every child deserves the best education so hopefully gradually all the countries will be introduced to digital media.

Digital media has given the education system across the world a different and advanced approach. It will help countries to grow as well.

Digital media and cultural heritage

In my podcast I have talked about Digital media and cultural heritage. I have mentioned about the importance of digital media in our daily life. How it became important to us over the time. I have mentioned about the connection of digital media and cultural institutions. My podcasts includes many ideas about how the cultural institutions like museums can connect to digital media to spread their knowledge across the globe. I began my podcast with the introduction of digital media and cultural heritage so that the listeners can understand the topic. I used a scholarly article in my podcast which helped me to get a thorough information about the topic. Apart from that I also researched about the topic and used other sources like online article to gain more information about the topic. I learnt a lot while doing this podcast including how to use sound cloud. My podcast is a reflection of my research and my personal experience about the cultural heritage and digital media. I have talked both, the advantages and disadvantages about how digital media and cultural heritage can work together. As I realized that it has some advantages and some disadvantages both. I also faced some challenges while doing this assignment. I took a lot of time to get along with the sound cloud and the technical information including how to upload the podcast etc. Since I am not a technical person it was one of the biggest challenge for me to do it properly. So I made many mistakes before uploading the final podcast. Apart from that I faced problem in recording the podcast. I took many retakes as every time something or the other would go wrong. Sometime my voice was not clear and sometimes I use to get stuck in between the lines and then had to record all over again. I have never spoken in front of people in public. So it boosted my confidence and helped to come out of my comfort zone. Yes there were many challenges which I faced but apart from those I got to learn so much. I learnt to overcome my fear of talking on a public or social platform. I gained information about the cultural heritage in depth. My computer and technical skills got polished while doing this assignment and somewhere it made me more confident to use new technologies. This assignment had taught me a lot. Gen Y and Social Media

My generation is a generation of technology. The generation Y (all born broadly between 1981-1999) have grown up with computers. People aged between 18-34 years old are more likely to use social media in their daily lives (Bolton et al., 2013). I remember that I made my first social media account on Facebook 8 years ago. The main purpose was to stay in touch with my dear ones and also to discover the new technology of social media. Today’s generation tends to use social media to create and share some of their online content. Even though social media existed since Gen Y but its wide adoption took place after 2003 (Boyd and Ellison, 2008).

Social media helps people to create their online identity. The Gen Y is the frequent user of the social media. They unusually create content including news feed, pictures, videos etc. and share it further. I am a social media user as well. I made my first social media account on Facebook a few years ago. It fascinated me a lot as it was very new and popular among my friends. But slowly and gradually I discovered other social media platforms such as Instagram, snap chat, We-chat, Twitter etc. I, then made my accounts on Instagram, snap chat and twitter as they had a growing public popularity.

I am a dancer and have been learning and teaching dance since more than 10 years. So when I discovered Instagram and other social media platforms I realized that it can help me to grow my knowledge about dance and spread it. So I started using my Instagram account to upload all the dance videos I make so that I can get more views and also, it helps people who wish to learn online dance. The dance videos and pictures I share are further viewed by the followers and I get amazing feedback. It helps me to stay connected with my friends and followers. Also I follow many other dance pages on Instagram so that I stay updated about the ongoing dance culture. I have shared dance videos on my Instagram account and have got hundreds of views. I think its a goo opportunity to showcase my talent and also get feedback from the followers.

The social media platform have made it possible for millions of people across the world to communicate with each other. Also, it helps to trade products and the customers can directly give feedback and ask questions. The emergence of social media facilities have made it easier for people to use it for their personal and professional means (Mangold and Faulds, 2009).

My social media profiles like Snapchat, Facebook or Instagram have allowed me to showcase my personal day to day experiences with my friends and followers. I can share my videos of travelling, different food I explore or whatever important activities I do. I think Facebook is a very efficient platform for me to post my views on different political and economical issues taking place. I can join different groups and pages which are of my interest. But as I mentioned above that Instagram became more popular among my friends and followers with the recent times. So I chose to use it as a platform to discover more about my passion of Dance and to post my Dance videos and photos so that I can reach out to more people who can acknowledge my passion for dance. I get feedback online by different people. Sometimes they are positive and sometimes they can be little criticizing. But I believe that is people’s opinions and they can express them.

When I uploaded my first dance videos I received hundreds of views and which encouraged me to follow my passion more and update my Instagram .So I started uploading and sharing more dance videos and I got a good response. But since I am a student and I also needed to manage my studies as well so it wasn’t possible update my Instagram on regular basis like the other Instagram professionals does. People also earn money via Instagram blogging. But for that one need to be very efficient, regular and consistent on it. They need to post on a particular period of time and the content should be remarkable so that they don’t disappoint their thousands or more followers.
But somewhere I realized that we are loosing touch with our real lives and real identity while we are so involved in creating our online identities.

The Gen Y is more focused on their online identity. They update everything on social media for the people they might not even know. But in real lives they are loosing touch from their original identities and real people.

Social media has helped the users to maintain a touch and bond with their families (Williams & Merten, 2011). I agree to this, Families nowadays tend to get scattered because of different reasons. For example child needs to go to different city or country for higher studies or job. Then the social media helps the families and friends to stay connected by seeing each other on video calls and following each other’s accounts to see what is happening in each others lives.

Sports hold an important part in our lives.Today there are several kinds of sports which have taken a hike.Several years ago, people were restricted to some of the very common sports like cricket, football, hockey etc.Reason being lack of promotions of other sports and not bringing other sports events in peoples notice.To make a sport popular it is important that people turn up to support it and witness it when it is held.

A lot of money and promotion is required to make it large.Since there were not many means of promoting a game several years ago people could not learn about different types of sports.But social media era has changed it all!Billions of people across the world use social media.Such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter etc.All you have to do is promote the event of a particular sport online via using these social media sites.It helps one to create a large amount of fan following which is beneficial for the event sponsors, players and also it makes people aware of the information of the event.Social media has a very strong impact on sports teams and athletes.Through social media like twitter, facebook etc. the sports team which are professional are able to attain connectivity of their fans and get their fans feedbacks and opinions.Twitter is one of the main social networking sites which is used by the athletes nowadays to stay in touch with their fans.

The athletes tend to post the directly after an event occur, which is really appreciated by their fans as they don’t have to wait for the TV or print media interviews of the athletes to know the insights of the game(Hambrick et al., 2010).Although social media has brought a drastic change in sports field by connecting its fans directly to athletes or by letting athletes or sports teams convey the important events and news with the world there is another very important aspect which social media has highlighted in sports that are women sports.Social media has given the support to women sports across the world.Social media has brought an idea of gender equality in the world (Creedon, 2014).

Approximately 30 years back in no digital media era, women faced gender inequality in the fields of sports because the males dominated the sports and the idea was that women are not meant for sports as she is not tough but feminine.But this thinking of people is changing now as social media is playing a key role to inculcate some changes in peoples mind.Women sports teams are promoted across the world using facebook, twitter etc.As 60% of the sports fan are digitally active they get the promotion and event updates.The U.S. women’s soccer Olympic gold medal competition against Japan had a huge number of fans in the stadium which was 80,203, plus millions watching or listening around the world. In this game, 711,646 tweets were posted during the two hours from 433,797 Twitter accounts (Tweet Reach Blog 2012).So I think social media is not only helping the fans to connect with athletes but also it is helping to build gender equality in sports.

Social Media And Travel

Social media has become an important part of our lives. From staying in touch with our loves ones to posting pictures to show our current updates. Social media includes Facebook, twitter, Instagram,snap chat etc. which are some very commonly used social media sites and applications via which people used to share their experiences. We all love traveling to different places and sharing the beautiful moments with our friends and families.Until the social media came into being with some extraordinary features people would print photos and show it to every one when they would come back home but now the scenario has been changed totally.

Today, the moment people decide to leave for a vacation they tend to show their excitement by posting status on Instagram Facebook etc. so that their friends and others know about their plan. When people post and share their vacation’s details like the pictures of the places they visit, the quality of food, hotel they stayed in etc. it helps others to get an idea about the place and if they would want to visit there or not!

This twitter poll suggests that most of the people post their pictures on social media when they travel.

Since it is a digital media world in which we live today, we don’t have to step out of the house to book tickets for our holidays or to arrange accommodations etc. as the travel and tourism companies has their online pages on Facebook and other sites which helps us to arrange a good vacation within our budget.

Social media is an important tool for the analysis of tourists’ attitudes and this is confirmed by the increased purchases and recommendations to other users. Building successful service-based brand in tourism means that each offer should be a unique value proposition based on the customer experience. (Brdaret al, 2014, p.759)

Use of social media while traveling affects the tourism companies as they rely upon the consumers’ feedback which they share online to attract more consumers and also the companies then share the feedback and pictures by the consumers on social media like their twitter and Facebook page. It can positively impact their sale. But if the consumers give a negative feedback online, which can be seen by others, then the company might lose some of its customers.

Social media are playing an increasingly important role in consumer decisions, with particular application to holiday choice, as an example of a high-involvement decision. (Bronner and Hoog , 2013)

Applications such as snap chats and Instagram’s allow the travelers to show their followers contemporary sights of the trip by uploading stories online. People show their hotel rooms and what kind of food they are eating which lets the followers get connected to their lives and see a new place via their eye.

This twitter post shows that people post their pictures of different locations while travelling so that others can see them.

 

Companies in tourism try to combine varied marketing techniques they used in the past and they analyses several specific factors in the process of developing communication mix strategy (type of tourism market, traveler readiness to make purchase, destination development stage, and the brand’s market share and positioning). (Brdaret al, 2014, p. 758)

It has become important for the travelers to post their images and comments about the vacation they go to so that their loved ones never miss seeing how beautiful and exciting memories have they created. When people’s friends go to a trip they tend to get feedback about the place they visited, hotel they stayed, food they ate, sightseeing etc. along with the pictures and videos also via social media. So if they like their posts and images they might want to go for a trip organized by the same travel company who organized the former’s trip. This increases the sale of the company as it gets more consumer because their service has been rated good online on social media. Hence, social media reviews and posts by the travelers not only let them share their experiences with their friends but also it affects the travel and tourism business.
